Lecturer – Journalism / Generalist (Prison Education)

Location: HMP Fosse Way, Tigers Road, Wigston, Leicester, LE18 4WS
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per year
Salary: Up to £37,440 per annum (depending on experience)

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a creative, adaptable and inspiring Lecturer to deliver Journalism and general education within HMP Fosse Way.

This role involves teaching engaging classes to learners with a wide range of abilities, many of whom may have had negative or interrupted experiences with education. You’ll play a key role in motivating students, helping them achieve qualifications, and supporting their personal growth, confidence and employment‑focused skills.

Alongside Journalism, you may deliver across other related subject areas, providing a varied and stimulating teaching timetable.

The role may also include outreach teaching across different parts of the prison. You’ll build strong professional relationships with learners and create a safe, inclusive learning environment that promotes aspiration and progress.

What You Will Do

  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging Journalism and general education lessons
  • Teach small groups (average of 12 learners), supported by a student mentor and inclusion practitioners
  • Deliver sessions of approximately 2.75 hours
  • Create your own schemes of work, lesson plans and creative teaching resources
  • Adapt teaching approaches to meet a diverse range of learning needs
  • Set SMART targets and track learner progress using Individual Learning Plans
  • Assess work, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate records
  • Ensure full compliance with quality assurance and curriculum standards
  • Support learners' wider personal development, confidence and employability skills
  • Work across the prison estate where education is delivered
  • Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and a positive classroom culture

What We’re Looking ForKnowledge, Expertise & Qualifications

  • A relevant degree or vocational qualification
  • Full teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS)
  • Experience teaching or training in Journalism, Media or a related subject
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of curriculum requirements and accreditation
  • Experience supporting diverse groups of learners through accredited courses

  • Creative, innovative and engaging teaching style
  • Ability to inspire learners who may have little confidence or limited prior education
  • Strong communication and relationship‑building skills
  • Ability to plan effectively, solve problems and adapt within a secure setting

  • Comfortable working within the structure and responsibilities of a prison environment
